Keep the Beat is a not-for-profit education initiative to make Louisiana communities safer and better places by teaching the public life-saving skills. Keep the Beat, funded by a partnership of companies and businesses, offers free bystander CPR classes to the public through single-day training events.
Keep the Beat classes are now offered in the Bayou Region parishes of Terrebonne, Lafourche, Assumption and St. Mary and in Opelousas and its surrounding areas.
Cardiovascular disease is the top killer in the country, claiming 950,000 lives a year.
Louisiana has one of the highest incidences of the disease in the world, making sudden cardiac arrest a frequent event, yet only one in 20 people know CPR. About 95 percent of sudden cardiac arrest victims die before they reach the hospital. CPR can add critical minutes to a sudden cardiac arrest victim's life.
